Pitri Paksha inspires gratitude
The period of Pitri Paksha has begun. Pitri Paksha is that fortnight observed in honor of all those who lived before us; molded us; and contributed to our material and spiritual development. In their honor the fortnight is observed through the medium of reflection, worship and prayer.
Hindu culture lists five principal duties for a conscious human being amongst which Pitri Yajna is enlisted. Parents and fore-parents worked and set the standards upon which we build and prosper both materially and spiritually. Values and life’s principles; preservation and teachings of the scriptures; and transmission of the culture from generations to generations have all been made possible by those before us.
It is in this recognition we pay homage to fore parents through personal reflections, worship, prayer and reading of the scriptures which are characterized as prominent features of Pitri Paksha.
While various traditions and practices have been observed to honor Pitri Paksha over the passage of time by different locality, family and lineage in a vast Hindu civilization, none is mandatory but are all based on a single recognition of being grateful for those who molded our heritage and shaped the evolution of a people rooted spiritual refinement.
May this period of Pitri Paksha inspires us along the noble path of gratitude, spiritual renewal and duty towards the preservation of Hindu culture and way of life.
