HOLIKA DAHAN

Must Read

HOLIKA DAHAN

Today our community is observing Holika Dahan. The observance begins in the evening with the bonfire ‘Holika’ lit having preceded by Pooja. The occasion is marked with chowtaals, kabirs, ulaaras and other Bhojouri genres of music.

Holika derives for ‘Hola’, meaning grains. The observance is as old as along as our civilization existed. Its’s celebration is rooted in the concept of sacrifice to nature as an agrarian society returns to the field. Our forefathers brought their harvest of varieties of grains cultivated to be offered in the community Havan, thanking nature for its bounty. It is the largest community thanksgiving.

The observance precedes the grand celebration of Phagwah.

May Holika Dahan inspire us along the path of thanksgiving and sacrifice to nature for her continuous supply of bounty and sustenance.

Happy Holika Dahan!
