His Excellency emphasized that there is no need to fear since there has been growing uncertainty amongst people in light of Venezuela’s planned elections to elect a Governor for Essequibo on May 25, 2025. He stated, “You have nothing to fear, you’re living in what is our sovereign space, and we’re going to protect and ensure that our sovereign space is respected by all”.

On May 1st, 2025 in a unanimous decision the International Court of Justice had ordered Venezuela to refrain from the preparation or conduct of elections in the territory Guyana administers control over.

The order stated, “pending a final decision in the case, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela must refrain from conducting elections or preparing to conduct elections in the disputed territory which the Co-operative Republic of Guyana currently administers and over which it exercises control.”

This ruling came in response to Guyana’s request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) filed on March 6, 2025, seeking provisional measures against Venezuela’s planned elections in Guyana’s Essequibo Region scheduled for May 25th, 2025, one day before Guyana’s Independence Day celebrations.

As it stands, Venezuela is barred from the engagement of any activity relating to the preparation and conduct of elections in Guyana.
