Secretary of State of the United States of America, Marco Rubio has pledged full support for Guyana’s sovereignty and security were Venezuela to threaten Guyana using force. The Secretary of State was at the time sharing a joint press brief with Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali at the president’s official residence when in response to a question from the media said, “if they (Venezuelan Government) were to attack Guyana or attack ExxonMobil or anything like that, it would be a very bad day — a very bad week — for them, and it would not end well”.
Rubio continued, “there will be consequences for adventurism. We will not allow illegitimate territorial claims to be an impediment to your dreams and to your right to develop this country into a symbol that I hope will inspire others”. These comments come at a time when Guyana and Venezuela are at the International of Justice (ICJ) seeking final ruling on the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award concerning the border controversy between the two nations.

This is the State Secretary’s first official visit to Guyana since taking office just over two months ago. It is part of a three-country visit to the Caribbean nations of Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname.
