Georgetown commemorated 12th International Day of Yoga

The High Commission of India in Georgetown, Guyana and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) commemorated the 12th International Day of Yoga today with great enthusiasm and a large gathering of participants. The event was organized under the global theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’.

Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health of Guyana, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Hon. Vanessa Benn, Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water as Guest of Honour and Swami Aksharananda, Founder of Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Guyana were also present, along with members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Indian diaspora, Indian Companies and other distinguished guests.

The programme featured a demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol led by instructor of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre as well as cultural performance by the Centre’s teachers and students including a musical Yoga performance by the students of ‘Namaste Yoga Centre’.

An exhibition on Ayurveda and its immense benefits in daily living to promote health was held during the event. Ministry of Health of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana had put up a health checkup camp and distribute vouchers for basic medical diagnostic services.

In his remarks, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the significance of Yoga as a holistic practice that promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being and emphasized its role in fostering healthier lifestyles and healthy aging.

Acting High Commissioner Mr. Manoj Kumar underscored the enduring relevance of Yoga as India’s invaluable gift to humanity. He noted that Yoga transcends boundaries of nationality, culture and religion, serving as a powerful instrument for achieving harmony between mind and body, enhancing overall well-being and promoting a balanced and sustainable way of life. He also highlighted the growing global acceptance of Yoga and its contribution to building healthier and more resilient societies.
