International Court of Justice orders Venezuela not to conduct elections in Essequibo
In a unanimous decision today May 1st, 2025, the International Court of Justice has ordered Venezuela to refrain from the preparation or conduct of elections in the territory Guyana administers control over.
The order stated, “pending a final decision in the case, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela must refrain from conducting elections or preparing to conduct elections in the disputed territory which the Co-operative Republic of Guyana currently administers and over which it exercises control.”
This ruling comes in response to Guyana’s request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) filed on March 6, 2025, seeking provisional measures against Venezuela’s planned elections in Guyana’s Essequibo Region scheduled for May 25th, 2025, one day before Guyana’s Independence Day.
As it now stands, Venezuela is barred from the engagement of any activity relating to the preparation and conduct of elections in Guyana.
